The Challenge

Communicable diseases account for over 70% of deaths in sub-Saharan Africa (WHO Africa). Malaria alone killed an estimated 608,000 people globally in 2022, with 95% of those deaths on the African continent. Nigeria carries the heaviest burden, accounting for nearly 27% of all global malaria cases.

These are not diseases without remedies. Effective treatments and prevention methods exist for every one of them. The gap is access — access to testing, to medicine, to trained health workers, and to information. Rotary District 9127 works to close that gap through mobile medical camps, supply donations, health education, and sustained community engagement.

PolioPlus: Our Flagship Campaign

Rotary's PolioPlus programme, the world's largest privately funded health initiative, has contributed to a 99.9% reduction in global polio cases since 1988. Nigeria was certified wild polio-free in 2020, and District 9127 remains an active partner in sustaining that achievement.

Every dollar donated to PolioPlus is matched 2-to-1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, tripling every contribution.
